3 And they sent and called him Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore lighten the hard service and heavy interest which thy father did put upon us, and we will serve thee.5 He said to them: Go you to the third day, and then again to me. And the people departed.6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and asked them: How do ye advise that I may answer this people?7 They say unto him, If thou wilt be a servant to this people, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words, they will be thy servants for ever.8 But he forsook the counsel of the elders gave him and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him, that stood before him,9 asking them, What counsel give ye that we respond to these people, I said, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us?10 And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us: so shalt thou say unto My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.11 As soon as my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips: but I will chastise you with scorpions. - 1 Kings 12

The inexperienced King Rehoboam was counsel with the elders and wise men who worked with his father, King Solomon. He received the elders advice and guidance on how it should act to succeed in the reign he was recently initiated.
Instead of taking into account the guidance and advice from older who told him that it would be important to serve and work for the people so that he would receive the very people the reward in the form of gratitude and obedience. The king did everything backwards, he decided to consult their childhood friends who were as young and as inexperienced as he.

If we really want to be happy and receive good advice and guidance we must first consult the Almighty God, and if after that we still want a human word, we must consult with men and women of God, experienced and truly committedwith the Lord's work.
